Garden
Compost Tumblers Provides An Economical, Environmental
Food For your Garden.
Garden
composting is the decomposition of plant remains
and other once-living materials such as kitchen food
scraps or lawn clippings to make an earthy, dark, crumbly
substance that is excellent for adding to garden plants,
houseplants or enriching garden soil. Using a compost
tumbler, or building a compost bin is an excellent way
to recycle your yard and kitchen wastes while reducing
landfill.
Composting is not a new idea. In the natural world,
composting is what happens as leaves pile up on the
forest floor and begin to decay. You can reproduce this
same concept in your own yard, turning your waste products
into a valuable natural fertilizer. If your goal is
a self sustaining garden then this is a large step in
that direction by following nature's lead.
Composting is half art and half science. Certain
waste materials are excellent for composting, while
some others just don't work. Good materials for composting
include : grass clippings, hay, green leaves, untreated
sawdust and wood chips, plant stalks, hedge trimmings,
old potting soil, twigs, vegetable scraps, coffee filters,
and tea bags. Avoid composting any chemically treated
products, diseased plants, meat, bones, fatty food scraps,
pernicious weeds, human or pet wastes.
There
are unlimited ways of containing a compost pile, including
compost tumblers, worm bins, multi bin configurations
to small pail sized composters. One of the first steps
to purchasing your new composter is to think about the
size of the compost you will be generating, if you live
in an apartment and only have limited space, a pail
would be suitable. large family homes with a lot of
scraps and garden waste could use a larger system. We
have detailed
information on solutions for composting using garden
compost tumblers.
Effecting composting requires the provision of
the right environmental conditions for microbes. Compost
is made by billions of microbes (fungi, bacteria, etc.)
whose food is the yard and kitchen scraps you feed them.
If the pile is cool enough, worms, insects, and their
relatives will help out the microbes. This will slowly
make compost out of your yard and kitchen wastes under
any conditions. Like all living things air, water, and
food are needed. Maintaining your pile to provide for
these needs, the microbes will happily turn your yard
and kitchen wastes into compost much more quickly. Keep
in mind the following basic ideas while building
your compost piles:
Air - Microbes are aerobic - they can't
do their work well unless they are provided with air.
Turn or fluff up the compost pile regularly with a garden
fork or similar implement.
Water - The pile should be watered if necessary
to bring it to the moisture level of a damp sponge.
In dry areas, the pile can be watered with a hose.
Food
- A good mix of food from the 'good list'. Some 'greens'
and some 'browns'.
